Sweeping around the South West coast along some of Australia's best beaches is the Great Ocean Drive (I know, they could have thought of something a little more original but that's Aussies for you). Just 10 days after completing the Great Ocean Road we stumbled across its younger, smaller brother.
After a mind numbing few days driving across the treeless plain that is the Nullarbor, Esperance was a very welcome sight. Situated 203km South of Norseman at the end of the Nullarbor, Esperance is a remote town but it was the biggest we had found since leaving Port Augusta in South Australia.
This hidden gem, first discovered by French explorers in 1792, was named after a French ship, meaning 'hope'. However, Aboriginals have been passing through this area for over 200,000 years and they refer to it as "Kepa Kurl" meaning 'the place where the waters lay down like a boomerang'. I like the sound of that.
The Great Ocean Drive begins from the Esplanade sweeping along the towns seafront beach before heading up out of town and along the coast. Just 2km in you will find some of the whitest sand beaches Australia has to offer which continue for miles.
This drive might not have the length of the infamous Great Ocean Road, being only 40km but it packs in some awe-inspiring island views, crisp white beaches and a Pink Lake. What more could you possibly ask for?!
The first stop is the Rotary Lookout. At the top of a steep hill is a viewing platform with 360 degree views of the pristine white beaches, rugged cliffs and the Pink Lake.
As you breach the first corner your mouth will drop as West Beach comes into view. Picture perfect white sand and blue sea. West Beach has some epic rolling waves perfect for experienced surfers as the tide pushes against the shallow coral.
West Beach transitions into the crystal clear calm waters of Blue Haven in the cove, perfect for a swim if you can face walking down the huge flight of stairs.
A short detour inland will take you to the Wind Farm. A walking trail is set out so that you can stand in the shadow of one of these powerful giants.
Observatory Lookout is another great spot to get a view of the some of the 100 plus islands that make up the Recherche Archipelago and if you are lucky, the seals that rest on the rocks below.
Continuing along the coast is Salmon Beach, Fourth Beach and Twilight Beach. In 2006, Twilight Bay was actually voted Australia's best beach and, for us, it did not fall short. The snow white sand descending into the crystal clear water is just stunning. Just look at it...
Around the corner is a dream for 4WD enthusiasts, if you can catch the tide correctly, you can drive all the way along the beach.
For those sticking to the tarmac, veering inland you will pass the Pink Lake, don't be fooled, right now it is not pink. They have had so much rain that the water has been disturbed. However, Warden Lake just next door is starting to turn pink so you won't be missing out.
Re-awaken your senses after the nothingness of the Nullarbor Plain with a visit to Esperance and the stunning Great Ocean Drive.
