Travel Diary: Merry Christmas & Happy New Year – Coogee, Sydney Fireworks and Randwick Races

19/01/2015
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (apologies it's a little late!)!! On the lead up to Christmas we tried to get into the spirit but we already knew that Christmas away from your family and in the sun is not fun.  Jo and Nathan went and got a load of decorations from the Reject Shop for our flat which definitely made us a little more festive. Along with watching a few Christmas classics.

After Skyping home on Christmas morning we spent the day on Coogee beach with our flatmates and some friends and had a good old Ausy BBQ and a few tinnies.  It was very chilled with music, beers and a few thousand people.  We even spotted a Guern!

Just a few thousand people behind us
As a storm was approaching late afternoon we got the bus home and Shaun and I chilled out on the sofa for the evening until it was Christmas morning at home in Guernsey! 7pm came and my niece and nephew finally woke up (8am at home) and we were able to Skype them whilst opening all their presents from Santa - modern technology is amazing!!  It did leave us feeling slightly deflated though sat their on our own with a pizza and crappy non-Christmas movie!  Australia really does not know how to do Christmas. There was not even a Christmas film on the tv on Christmas day! On boxing day we went to the annual horse racing at Randwick race course. The entrance is free if you show your international passport.  We got glammed up and got a taxi down to the race course.  It was such a good day and we even won a bit of money as we put a $10 bet on every race.

We put a bet on 'wedding' and it won ... that's the first $50 for the wedding fund.
The end of the races didn't go so well with Charlotte falling over and splitting her head open. Jo, Shaun and I stayed with her until Jo took her to the hospital to get it glued.  There had to be some drama but luckily she was fine.  We carried on and met the rest of the guys down the pub for more drinks and giggles ... I was so drunk I couldn't really tell you what happened.

NYE in Sydney ... we didn't have a plan for the evening we just knew we had to watch the worlds best firework display! Being unorganised Shaun and I whipped up a last minute romantic little BBQ on our balcony with a few drinks before heading down to The Star Casino Wharf just around the corner to meet everyone else and watch the fireworks.  It was a great little spot along the river that looked onto the Harbour Bridge. The 9pm fireworks were amazing. We could see the fireworks on Darling Harbour, the Harbour Bridge and two more down the river all mirroring each other. Unfortunately, ten minutes to midnight the wind died which meant that the fireworks at midnight were covered in smoke so we didn't see that much of the bridge. We did however, see the fireworks up the river which were the same anyway.

So there we have it. That wraps up 2014. Really excited for what is to come in 2015.  We have a few weeks work, then we buy our campervan ready for my mum and dads visit on 8 March for another road trip from Sydney to Adelaide then on to Perth.   What's my new years resolution: blog more!!  I promise there will be a post once a week (where possible with internet connection!).  I want to grow this blog and reach more people.  I will be writing reviews on places, activities and products.  Please share, follow and subscribe to all my social media!  A la perchoine is now on Facebook, Instagram and even Twitter! A la perchoine Jodie x
