15th September - Sri Lanka to Bangkok
We have seen everything we planned to in Sri Lanka and feel it's about time to leave, a week earlier than planned. We moved our flight so we leave today at 7.15am and only takes 3.5hours. For this short flight we actually had a comfy seat and TV, typical! Why didnt we have this plane on the way here! We watched Need for Speed and before we knew it we were in Bangkok.
Arriving in Bangkok took us straight back feeling like we were still travelling from last time, we spent so much time in this airport - best in the world! We picked up our bags and a sweet Israli girl approached us and asked if she could share a cab to Khao San Road so we agreed, she was very little and didn't look like she was out of Taken. We went downstairs and got a metered taxi to Khao San. In the 4 years since we have been here the city has definitely been built up even more with lots more skyscrapers. It took about an hour and cost 600b which we split with the girl. We had pre booked The D&D Hotel which is right in the middle of Khao San for 2 nights costing 2160b (£20 per night). We booked a Superior room so that we wouldn't be right next to the road and it was ok, the room was clean and minimal music from the road. And when they say small balcony they mean small!
We headed straight out for some food but first making the mistake of going to the tourist information who try and organise your entire Thai trip with buses and flights and accommodation and get pretty aggy when you walk out. At this point we were tired and hungry so found a local restaurant and just about managed to order two plates of food as they didn't speak any English. And karma came and this time a bird pooed on Shaun's head at the traffic lights! I got my own back and laughed at him whilst he flailed around!! As we were walking around the streets a lady asked us if we needed help and gave us some advice. As soon as she left me and Shaun looked at each other and said the same thing ... we saw her last time! How weird is that! I can't tell you if it was the 2008 trip or 2010 but we have definitely spoken to that exact same lady on the street before!!
In the evening we set out for a beer and to find our local noodle street stall but we couldn't remember how to get there. We wondered round for an hour and finally found it, it was still there and just the same! We had our usual; noodle soup and a beer.
Later on we headed for a cocktail or two from a VW van then onto Khao San and sat in one of the big bars and had a cocktail or two or three, maybe four. Just outside the hotel there was a kebab stand which Shaun obviously had to get something from for the 'walk' home. I asked the two girls serving how old they were, one was 12 and 15 - it broke my heart!
16th September - Bangkok
We have 1 whole day in Bangkok today so first things first a foot massage on Khao San watching the world go by. You get the strangest variety of people here, I could people watch for hours.
Shaun needed his haircut so he plucked up the courage to go into a Thai salon but the guy did wonders and did a normal haircut and no Lego man this time!!
In the afternoon we headed to MBK shopping centre which is about 40 minutes away in a taxi, we managed to haggle them down from 300b to 100b. We walked around the shopping centre for a few hours killing some time and not buying anything!!
This evening was the same going for noodles (she even remembered our order) and a few beers.
